Spirited Development
Pastor presses on with $500M neighborhood initiative
- by Tracey Drury

Companies complain all the time about the difficulty of recruiting and retaining quality workers, while thousands of people struggle to find good-paying jobs.

The Rev. Michael Chapman is working on solutions to both problems. He's doing it while advancing a $500 million development for the Fruit Belt neighborhood on Buffalo's East Side.

"This is going to be a major initiative in putting minorities to work," he says. "This will create 15,000 jobs over the next 10 years. There's not another project like this anywhere in the country."

Pastor visits White House for summit on urban affairs
The Buffalo News  |  September 18, 2010, 6:35 AM
WASHINGTON— The Rev. Michael Chapman of Buffalo's St. John Baptist Church went to the White House on Friday for an urban affairs summit that he hopes will help him bring more federal money back to Buffalo.

"Everyone's beginning to notice the development efforts we're doing," said Chapman, who was one of about 100 people from across the country invited to the White House for the event. Officials from federal agencies spoke at the meeting and outlined changes in urban development policies, Chapman added.
Chapman's church has been working for a decade on a plan to reshape the East Side neighborhood, with the ultimate goal of adding 15,000 jobs.
